Kulmen File Manager — Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 13, 2026

Kulmen File Manager (“Kulmen”, “the app”) is an Android app made by Westchase Products Company, LLC (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what happens to information when you use it.

The short version

  • Your files stay on your phone. We have no servers. We never receive your files, their names, your folders, or anything you do in the app.
  • No accounts, no analytics, no usage statistics. The app does not track how you use it.
  • Ads are served by Google AdMob, which collects some information about your device to show and measure ads. If you buy Remove ads or Pro, the ad software is never started.
  • Settings backup is optional. If you turn it on, your settings are stored in your own Google Drive, in a hidden folder only Kulmen can see.

The rest of this page explains each of these in full.

Your files

Kulmen is a file manager: it lists, opens, copies, moves, renames, deletes and searches files on your phone, on memory cards and USB drives, and on servers you add yourself. All of this happens on your phone. The app has no server of its own, and nothing about your files is sent to us or to anyone else, except in the cases listed under “What leaves your phone”.

To do its work, the app asks Android for these permissions, each when it is first needed:

  • All files access — to browse and manage the files on your phone.
  • Photos, videos and audio — on newer Android versions, to show your media.
  • Usage access (optional) — to show how much space each app uses and when it was last used, on the Applications screen.
  • The list of installed apps — to show the Applications screen and to find which app can open a file.
  • Notifications — to show the progress of a copy or move while you are in another app.
  • Uninstall requests — so you can uninstall an app from the Applications screen. Android asks you to confirm every time.

What the app keeps on your phone — your settings, bookmarks, the trash, the thumbnails it has drawn, the network locations you have added, whether you have bought anything — stays in the app’s own storage on your phone. It is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its data. Android’s own backup of app data is turned off for Kulmen, so none of it is copied to Google’s backup or to a new phone.

What leaves your phone, and when

Information leaves your phone only in these cases.

Ads (Google AdMob)

The free version of Kulmen shows ads, served by Google AdMob. To show ads, measure them and limit fraud, Google’s ad software collects information such as your device’s advertising ID, IP address, device model and operating system, the app’s name and version, and how you interact with ads. Google may use it to personalize ads, depending on your choices and where you live.

  • Where the law requires it — for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland — Google’s consent form asks for your choices before any ad is requested. You can change them later in Kulmen under Profile → Privacy → Ad privacy choices.
  • On any Android phone you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone’s settings (Settings → Google → Ads, or Settings → Privacy → Ads, depending on the phone).
  • Kulmen never gives the ad software your files, file names, folders or anything else about what you do in the app.
  • If you buy Remove ads or Pro, the ad software is not started at all.

How Google uses this information is described at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Purchases (Google Play)

Remove ads, Pro and color schemes are bought through Google Play. Google handles the payment; we never see your card or bank details, or your name. The app receives from Google Play only what is needed to unlock what you bought: which product, whether it is active, and Google’s purchase record. Google Play’s own privacy policy applies to the purchase: https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Settings backup to your Google Drive (optional, Pro)

If you turn on settings backup in the Profile, you sign in with your Google account and allow Kulmen to use its own hidden folder in your Google Drive (Google calls it the app data folder). Kulmen cannot see any other file in your Drive, and the folder is not shown in Drive’s file list.

  • What is backed up: your appearance choices, view and sort choices, file list and trash settings, and your bookmarks (their names and the folders they point to).
  • What is never backed up: your files, passwords, network locations, the folders you have allowed the app to use, the contents of the trash, and your purchases (Google Play restores those).
  • On your phone, the app keeps only your Google account’s email address, to show which account the backup belongs to.
  • To remove it: Profile → Settings backup → Delete backup deletes the backup from your Drive and withdraws Kulmen’s access to it. You can also remove Kulmen’s access at any time from your Google Account, under Security → Your connections to third-party apps and services.

The backup is stored by Google under Google’s privacy policy. We never receive it.

Network locations (Pro)

When you add a server — SFTP, SMB (Windows sharing), WebDAV or FTP — Kulmen connects directly from your phone to that server. We are not involved and receive nothing. The user name, password or key you enter is kept in Android’s encrypted storage on your phone and is sent only to that server. Connections that are not encrypted (plain FTP and WebDAV over HTTP) are marked in red in the app.

Sharing over Wi-Fi (Pro)

Sharing over Wi-Fi lets a computer on the same Wi-Fi network open your phone’s files in a web browser. The phone runs a small web server on your local network only, protected by a new password each time it starts, and stops when you stop it. The connection is not encrypted, so use it on networks you trust, such as your home Wi-Fi.

Place names for photos

When you open the details of a photo that contains location coordinates, Kulmen shows the town and region where it was taken. To find the name, it asks Android’s own geocoding service, which on most phones sends the coordinates to Google. The app shows only the town and region, never a street address, and does not store the result.

When you contact us

If you write to us, we receive your email address and what you send, and use them only to answer you.

What we do not do

  • We do not run servers, and we do not receive, store or sell your personal information.
  • The app contains no analytics and no crash-reporting software of its own.
  • We do not have app accounts. Google sign-in is used only for the optional settings backup.

Google Play and Android may send crash and performance reports to Google if you have allowed this in your phone’s settings. Google shows developers summaries of these reports, which can include the phone model and Android version, but not who you are or your files.

Children

Kulmen is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

Your choices and rights

Because we do not keep personal information on any server, most of what the laws of your country let you ask for — to see, correct or delete information about you — concerns information held by Google: ad data, your Google Drive backup and your Google Play purchases. You can manage these through your Google Account and the settings described above. If you have a question or a request about Kulmen, write to us and we will answer.

Security

Passwords for network locations are kept in Android’s encrypted storage. The settings backup travels to Google Drive over an encrypted connection. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but nothing about your files is ever sent to us.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date at the top.
